That Old Truck Behind the Barn: Planning a Rural Vehicle Pickup

It started as temporary parking. The old truck went beside the barn while you decided what to do with it. Then the grass grew, the tires softened, and 'later' became several seasons. Now you want the space back—but collecting it is a little more involved than backing a truck into a suburban driveway.

On Langley's rural properties, the route to the vehicle can matter as much as the vehicle itself. A good pickup plan starts with a conversation about access, not an assumption that a tow truck can go anywhere.

Show the whole route, not just the vehicle

A close-up tells the buyer about bodywork. It doesn't show a narrow gate, a tight bend beside an outbuilding, or the soft patch halfway down the lane. If you can do so safely, take photos of the approach, parking area, and any potential obstacles.

Around Aldergrove, Campbell Valley, and other rural parts of the Township, an address may lead to more than one entrance. Explain which gate to use and whether the driver needs to call for access. Don't leave a collection team guessing between a house driveway and a farm lane.

Ground conditions can change the appointment

A track that is firm in summer may be too soft after rain. Tell the removal team if the vehicle is on grass, in mud, or beside a ditch. Don't promise that the truck can reach it just because your own car uses the lane.

The driver needs to assess safe access for the equipment being used. If ground conditions are unsuitable, collection may need to wait or require another approach. A postponed pickup is preferable to a stuck truck, damaged property, or unsafe recovery.

  • Are gates wide enough, and can they be unlocked?
  • Are there low branches, overhead cables, or restricted turns?
  • Is the approach firm and level enough for the intended equipment?
  • Does the vehicle have all its wheels, and can it roll?
  • Is there room to load without blocking another entrance?

Explain what has changed since the car last moved

Long storage can leave brakes seized, tires deflated, or wheels partly sunk into the ground. Mention any parts removed for another project. If you don't know whether it can roll, don't pull it with farm equipment just to test it.

Look from a safe distance for obvious leaks or damage and tell the collection team what you can see. Avoid crawling underneath, disturbing a possible nest, or lifting the vehicle with improvised supports. Recovery details should be assessed by the people doing the collection.

Keep the vehicle sale separate from clearing the property

An old car isn't a container for everything else you want gone. Tires piled nearby, fuel cans, paint, machinery parts, and household rubbish may need separate disposal. Check exactly what the buyer has agreed to collect so the appointment doesn't become an unexpected cleanup job.

If you have several vehicles, provide details for each one. Ownership and condition can differ, even when they have all been parked together for years. A buyer's offer for one complete truck doesn't automatically apply to another missing its engine.

Give the driver a clear arrival plan

Arrange permission with the property owner, keep pets and livestock clear of the loading area, and make sure the person responsible for paperwork is available. If a gate must remain closed for animals, explain that before arrival rather than leaving it open.
