Scrap Car Paperwork in BC: What Documents Do You Actually Need?

One of the most common concerns when selling a scrap car in British Columbia is paperwork. What do you actually need? What happens if you've lost the title? This guide answers all of those questions so you can go into the transaction with confidence.

The Most Important Document: Your BC Vehicle Title

In British Columbia, the vehicle title is the document that proves legal ownership. It's sometimes called the "pink slip" because of its colour. When you sell or transfer a vehicle — including selling it for scrap — you must sign the title over to the buyer. This is what legally transfers ownership and protects you from future liability.

Without the title, the transaction becomes more complicated. Some buyers won't complete a sale without it. Others may proceed with alternative documentation, but it's the exception, not the rule.

What You'll Need to Sell a Scrap Car in BC

  • BC Vehicle Title (signed over to the buyer)
  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's licence, passport, or BC ID)
  • Current ICBC registration (helpful but not always required)
  • Keys to the vehicle (if available)

That's it. The transaction is straightforward when you have the title. The buyer will complete the transfer paperwork on their end and handle notification to the Ministry of Finance and ICBC.

What If You've Lost Your BC Vehicle Title?

Lost titles are extremely common, and they're not a dead end. Here's how to get a replacement:

  1. Visit an ICBC Autoplan broker location in Langley or anywhere in BC
  2. Bring your government-issued ID and your vehicle's licence plate number
  3. Request a duplicate title — ICBC can confirm and reissue it
  4. There is a small administrative fee for the replacement
  5. Turnaround is typically same-day or within a few business days

You can also contact ICBC directly by phone to start the replacement process. In some cases, your current registration documents combined with your ID may be sufficient for a buyer to proceed while you obtain the replacement title.

Selling a Scrap Car Registered in Someone Else's Name

If the vehicle is registered to a deceased family member, a former spouse, or another person, the process is more involved. For estate situations, you'll typically need letters probate or letters administration from the BC Supreme Court before you can legally transfer ownership. In simpler cases (e.g., the owner is still alive but not present), a signed, notarized authorization may be accepted.

We recommend contacting ICBC and consulting with a notary public if you're in this situation. A reputable scrap car buyer will be transparent about what documentation they need and won't pressure you to skip steps.

After the Sale: Cancelling Your ICBC Insurance

Once your vehicle has been removed, don't forget to cancel your ICBC Autoplan insurance. You may be entitled to a partial premium refund for the unused portion of your policy. You can cancel online through the ICBC website, by calling ICBC directly, or by visiting an Autoplan broker.

Keep a copy of the signed title transfer for your own records — this protects you if there are ever any questions about when ownership changed hands.
